What to pack for Egypt: Nile, desert and Red Sea

Light layers for temples, a warmer jumper for desert nights and dawn balloons, modest dress for mosques, reef-safe sun for the coast.

Egypt moves between city heat, Nile breeze, desert evenings and the Red Sea. Pack for changeable days, not a single climate. Travel light: hotel laundry exists, and a cabin bag often suffices for a week’s circuit.

Clothing

  • Breathable shirts and a light jumper for dawn balloon flights, winter Cairo, and desert nights.
  • Shoulders and knees covered for mosques, churches and conservative villages (Siwa, St Catherine).
  • Comfortable walking shoes for temples — stone is uneven, and marble is polished.
  • Swimwear at the hotel, boat or beach only — not at Giza or Karnak.

Sun, Nile, desert, sea

  • High SPF, a wide hat, sunglasses, a refillable bottle. Egypt is bright even in winter.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen on Giftun and other marine parks.
  • A warmer layer for White Desert and Siwa camps; nights drop fast.
  • For the 2 August 2027 eclipse in Luxor: shade, electrolytes, certified solar viewers (we include them on our stays).

Documents

Passport, visa approval, insurance certificate, copies of both. Regular medicines in original packaging. See the full packing notes before you zip the suitcase.
